The V-Twin is introduced in 1909 but suffers problems and is withdrawn. In 1911 the modified V-Twin returns for good.

Harley-Davidson built its first manufacturing site in 1906 on Juneau Avenue in

Milwaukee, WI.

In 1907, the company produced 150 motorcycles.

In 1907, police departments started to use the motorized cycle to catch criminals at a quicker speed. They enjoyed the freedom that the cycle gave them. Thus, making their jobs easier.

Harley-Davidson began using the

‘Bar and Shield’ logo in 1910 and patented it in 1911.

In 1936, after the great depression,

Harley-Davidson created on El model bike,

that was also know as the Knucklehead.

They produced 9,812 of these cool cycles.

With the success of their motorcycles, the

inventors were willing and able to try

something new. In 1922, they invented the

74 cu in. V-Twin engine. By doing so, they

made the Harley-Davidson the fastest

motorcycle around.

In 1920, Harley-Davidson had a race team

whose mascot was a pig. After each victory,

the driver would hoist the pig up on to the

gas tank and drive a victory lap. Thus,

starting the term ‘hog’.

The Black Hills rally is a very popular

motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis, SD.

The Jack Pine Gypsies Motorcycle Club started this rally and it has been going

strong ever since 1938.

In 1948, Harley-Davidson motorcycles were on the rise, everyone wanted one. The company decided to create the Panhead.

At the end of 1948, they had produced 31,163 Panhead motorcycles

In 1957, Harley-Davidson created the

Sportster, the most favored design created

by Harley-Davidson. The only changes that

have been made through the years is the speed of the engine.

In 1965, a world land speed record of

177,225 mph for 250cc motorcycles on a

modified Harley-Davidson Sprint was set by

George Roeder.

In 1969, Harley-Davidson merged with

American Machine and Foundry Corporation

(AMF). In 1981, the company bought back all

the shares from AMF.

In 1960, the Topper was the only motor scooter ever produced by Harley-Davidson

throughout the first 100 years of making

motorcycles.

Eric Buell introduced his futuristic Buell

RR 1000 using the Sportster engine in 1986. The engine was completely covered as in the Honda Pacific Coast and the

Vincent Black Prince.

In July 2001, Harley-Davidson released the

VRSCA V-Rod. It has the first ever

water-cooled engine. This motorcycle weighs in at 595.7 lbs, has electronic sequential port fuel injection, & holds 3.7 gallons of fuel.

In 2003, there were lots of celebrations across

the world to celebrate an amazing

one hundred years of Harley-Davidson

Sportster models launched over the years are

XLX-61, a new model launched in 1983. XLH-1200 was introduced in 1988 and the XR-750 in 1970.
